november 7, 2011Dean Spanley

Clayoquot Theatre
Monday, November 7, 2011 • 8 pm
(2009, UK/NZ, Com/Dr, 99 min, Not Rated)
Directed by Toa Fraser

Multiple Oscar nominee Peter O'Toole adds yet another offbeat role to his long resume with the mystical comedy-drama Dean Spanley. O'Toole plays Horatio Fisk, a cantankerous septuagenarian living out his final days at the turn of the 20th Century. Fisk has little time for his son, but when the pair meets the unusual Dean Spanley, they share a wine known as the “Imperial Tokay”. Under the influence, Spanley brings forth reminiscences of a prior life lived out as a canine - and his recollections hold a rather bizarre connection to Horatio's familial past.

november 14, 2011The Tree of Life

Clayoquot Theatre
Monday, November 14, 2011 • 8 pm
(2010, US, Dra/Fant, 139 minutes, Rated G)
Directed by Terrence Malick

From the acclaimed director of Badlands, and Days of Heaven, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwest family in the 1950’s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years (played by Sean Penn) as he tries to reconcile the complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the meaning of life, and questioning the existence of faith.

The film won the highest prize at Cannes this year: the Palme d’Or.

november 21, 2011Forkes over Knives

Clayoquot Theatre
Monday, November 21, 2011 • 8 pm
(2011, US, Doc, 96 min, G)
Directed by Lee Fulkerson

Join the conversation that’s changing the way [we] eat.
This illuminating documentary serves as a natural successor to Food, Inc. in taking a critical look at the consequences of Western dietary habits. While some might view the lower-budget Forks over Knives as a long-form commercial for veganism, Fulkerson's evidence supporting the benefits of a plant-based diet is too compelling to dismiss (and he never claims that a small piece of cheese ever killed anyone). An opening title cautions that the film should not serve as a substitute for medical advice, but it certainly provides helpful information for anyone concerned about their health.

“I loved it, and I need all of you to see it.” – Dr. Mehmet Oz

november 28, 2011Incendies

Clayoquot Theatre
Monday, November 21, 2011 • 8 pm
(2010, Can, Drama, 130 min, Rated PG)

A mother's last wishes send twins Jeanne and Simon on a journey to Lebanon in search of their tangled roots. Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad's acclaimed stageplay, Incendies tells the powerful and moving tale of two young adults' voyage to the core of deep-rooted hatred, never-ending wars and enduring love.

Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2011 Academy Awards.

“A real masterwork... A devastatingly powerful film.” - Brendan Kelly, The Gazette
